If you’re not sure exactly where you stand in terms of your RPE, you can use the Talk Test. Speaking during your training gives you another means of measuring your intensity level. You can say anything you want during this test but some people choose to say the Pledge of Allegiance as a baseline standard, but anything will do. Basically the harder it is to speak while you’re working out, the higher your RPE.
Reference the chart below. You will notice that in Ratings 1-5 the Talking Level is the same. This is because Ratings 1-5 are performed at a lower level and should not be affecting your ability to speak. If they do then you are pushing yourself too hard.
